About Hans Raj Hans

Padma Shri Hans Raj Hans, born 9 April 1962 in Shafipur village near Jalandhar, is one of the towering Sufi and folk voices of modern Punjab. A graduate of DAV College, Jalandhar, he trained under Ustad Puran Shah Koti and launched his recording career in 1983 with Jogian Da Kanna Vich. He has since built a catalogue that spans qawwali-inflected Sufi kalaam, Punjabi folk revival and mainstream pop: Ni Vanjaaran Kuriye, Nit Khair Manga, Dil Tote Tote Ho Gaya, Chorni, Sili Sili Hawa and Punjabiyan Di Shaan. He sang alongside Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in Kachche Dhaage (1999) and later recorded for Nayak, Bichhoo, Patiala House and Black & White. He received the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and served as Member of Parliament for North West Delhi.

Everything You Need to Know Before Booking Hans Raj Hans

There are singers, and then there are institutions. Hans Raj Hans belongs firmly in the second category. Four decades into a career that began with a village-boy’s fascination with a passing street singer, he remains one of the very few Punjabi artists whose name alone lends stature to an event. That is what you are booking: not simply a performance, but a certain weight.

His voice is classically shaped – long, elastic phrasing, ornamented improvisation, a distinctive upper register that has survived remarkably well. In a live setting this means his set rewards a listening audience. Sufi kalaam, folk material and his best-known pop hits work beautifully at a wedding reception, a Baisakhi gala, a Sufi evening or a corporate cultural night. They work poorly as background music for a cocktail hour, and no artist of his standing should be asked to compete with clinking glasses.

His accompanying setup usually includes tabla, harmonium or keyboard, dholak and supporting vocalists. Venues should provide clean monitoring and a stage with enough depth for the ensemble. Insist on a real soundcheck. For a singer whose entire appeal rests on vocal detail, poor monitoring is the fastest way to waste a substantial fee.

Cost drivers are conventional: city tier, venue type, date seasonality, set length and travel. Because he divides time between Delhi and Punjab and maintains public commitments, his diary requires early engagement – one to three months minimum for an Indian date, three to six for an overseas booking. Peak wedding season from November to February is competitive. Sound, lighting, travel, hospitality and taxes usually sit outside the artist fee, and we itemise them clearly. For budget context across the industry, read our guide on how much it costs to book a Punjabi singer.

He is a particularly strong choice for cultural institutions, gurdwara-adjacent celebrations, government and civic functions, heritage brand launches and diaspora community events, where his Padma Shri and his standing as a folk custodian carry real meaning. Families booking him for a wedding typically place him in the earlier, more formal part of the evening.

For readers placing him among his peers, our profile of Gurdas Maan’s net worth and career covers the other great living Punjabi folk voice, and our list of the top 50 male Punjabi singers maps the wider field.

Book him for a moment that deserves reverence. Our team at Book Punjabi Singer handles availability, contracting, ensemble coordination and hospitality throughout.
